Art That Changed the World: Transformative Art Movements and the Paintings That Inspired Them by DK
Art That Changed the World: Transformative Art Movements and the Paintings That Inspired Them by DK is This is a book I bought for my daughter while I was homeschooling her for a brief period of time during her 3rd grade year. I only assigned certain sections to her in support of the curriculums I was using for social studies and history during that time. This is a big book and way more then 3rd grade art history can tackle, but I think it's a good resource for her to have moving forward. She said that some of the information was very interesting, but she did not like the paintings that had naked people in them. Those weren't in the assigned sections, but she likes art, and flipped through some of this on her own time. And I really think this is a book grown ups can enjoy too. My husband and I sat down with it during one of our date activities and used it as a frame of reference to discuss our own views on some of the artists and the merits of their works. This book opens with a picture of prehistoric art from Lascaux, circa 15,000-13,000 BCE. So people have been making art for a very long, long time. It's not really possible to cover everything in a book of this nature, as it is there are 400 pages. I think it's a decent enough overview from the Western Civilization perspective. However, some pretty big groups get left out of this book...Asian artists, African artists, etc. and because I really think artisans from those groups have also changed the world, I felt their omission is what keeps this from being a 5 star book.
Art That Changed the World: Transformative Art Movements and the Paintings That Inspired Them by DK is Pros: It's a large & thick book with a lot of content inside.Cons: Majority of the book is classical/European/Renaissance art- if you enjoy more impressionism and/or 20th century art I would recommend a different book. This book also arrived damaged with a large tear down the front cover.
Art That Changed the World: Transformative Art Movements and the Paintings That Inspired Them by DK is OK, itâs a âcoffee-table book,â but itâs one lavishly illustrated coffee-table book. "Art" doesnât go into much detail about individual painters or paintings â" actually, it doesnât go into much detail about anything â" but as a guide to finding what you like so that you can find more of what you like, itâs a precious resource. Now, about that title ⦠judging from the bookâs content, the only âart that changed the world,â at least until recent years, was art produced in Europe. Oh, really?
Art That Changed the World: Transformative Art Movements and the Paintings That Inspired Them by DK is Great read, and a fun and easy refresher for more seasoned Art History students, and a fun guidebook for those just getting their feet wet with the history of art around the world. Skewed more towards Western Art, but that's pretty common in a lot of different texts.
